Making Friends: Best Buddies of South Florida & the HMIP Team

HMIP, philanthropy
Saturday, March 26th, 2011, Gabrielle and I will be partaking in the Best Buddies Friendship Walk.  For the month of March we will be fundraising to support Best Buddies and help people with developmental disabilities.  I will be actively using my social networking pages to create awareness for this important cause, as well as, recruiting more friends and family to join the HMIP Team.
“Best Buddies is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” – Best Buddies Florida.Org
All in all, this non-profit organization provides six different programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  Ranging from partnerships with local elementary schools through colleges and including an email-based program called “e-Buddies.” Through this program members who are 10 years old and up are matched with peer volunteers from across the United States and around the globe- a safe online experience to build a friendship.
Best Buddies works passionately to integrate members with communities by teaming up with employers for job placement. The Best Buddies Jobs program helps individuals find and keep employment of their choice by providing continuous support and training. This specialized Best Buddies program aids people with intellectual disabilities to earn an income, pay taxes, and work in an environment alongside others in the community.  Best Buddies Jobs has helped more than 500 individuals attain integrated employment positions.
Since 1987 Best Buddies has grown impressively. However, our country still lacks programs to help people with intellectual disabilities integrate into society. There are about seven million individuals with these disabilities in the USA.  Best Buddies is working towards establishing and implementing their programs in more localities.  But, they need our support to make it happen!
This month’s Best Buddies Friendship Walk in Hollywood, Florida will help fundraise for all these valuable programs.  This year the Walk will take place at Topeekeegee-Yugnee Park, 3300 N. Park Road (Just West of I-95, off Sheridan Street).  A fun-filled family and community event kicks off with the 2 mile walk around the park and then breaks off into a day complete with lunch, exciting activities, entertainment and an awesome opportunity to interact with others.
