In the spirit of keeping my 2011 Initiative going into the new year, 2012. I have decided to help a fellow HMIP in her journey to create support and awareness for a cause that she holds very dear.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida has created family Walk day’s throughout the year in various cities. The HMIP Team has registered to walk with our fellow HMIP’s group, “Team Mason” on April 28th, 2012 in Daytona, Florida.
If you read my “Military Hot Mama” interview, than you got to know Amy Smith much better. Amy has since then worked towards establishing her own non-profit organization to benefit children and families directly affected by Epilepsy. The “Empowering Hope Foundation” plans to establish charitable sponsorships for families in need. According to the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida, this condition has cost families an approximate “12.5 billion dollars directly and indirectly, mostly from lost productivity at work and at home.” (source: www.epilepsyfla.org)
Each year 200k people are diagnosed and 45,000 of those people are kids younger than fifteen years old. With growing numbers like these, it is no surprise that there are many other charitable foundations created. Amy and her husband, Dennis, have taken it a step further. They intend to create awareness by educating the public in offering signature publications with the “latest pertinent information regarding Epilepsy and Seizures from top researchers in the field of Epilepsy.” (source: Empowering Hope Foundation)
What many don’t know, is that Epilepsy is not an illness. Rather, it is a symptom of a neurological disorder caused by head injury, trauma/injury at birth or stroke among other presumed reasons. Epilepsy is not contagious but it does not discriminate.
I have set up a quick donation link for the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida on my home page here and that of Iliana Taleno & Assoc. Find the logo for this foundation and click it to make a generous and secure online donation. Your support is appreciated!
